TEHRAN – To provide potable water for a 47 million population the Energy Ministry plans to transfer water from the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman to 16 provinces in central Iran, Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian announced on Tuesday.

“A plan is under study to desalinate water in the coasts of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman and send water to 16 provinces and provide water for 47 million people,” the minister said.
The ministry had already announced that it plans to transfer water from the Caspian Sea to regions inside Iran.
“Due to climate change and decrease in renewable resource we are forced, like many other countries in the world, to desalinate water in the seas in northern and southern country and transfer it to central parts and other regions through tunnels,” Chitchian explained.
